The story of Haenel-C. G. Haenel Waffen und Fahrradfabrik begins in 1840, when Carl Gottlieb Haenel established his workshop in Suhl, a city renowned for its gunsmithing heritage. Initially focusing on metal goods for firearms, Haenel quickly gained recognition for quality and innovation. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company expanded into military contracts, producing bayonets and rifles for the German armed forces. The interwar and WWII periods marked Haenel’s rise to global prominence, with the MP 40 and Sturmgewehr 44 setting new standards in firearm design. Despite the devastation of WWII and subsequent Soviet control, Haenel adapted, producing air rifles and hunting arms during the GDR era. After German reunification, the company was revitalized, eventually joining the Merkel Group and, through it, Caracal International.
