The Cosmi story begins in 1873 with Rodolfo Cosmi, a humble carpenter and passionate hunter in the Montefeltro hills of central Italy. Unable to afford a shotgun, Rodolfo's ingenuity led him to construct his first firearm in 1895 using worn-out parts from an old shotgun and the shaft of an umbrella—a testament to the resourcefulness that would define the brand. His mechanical genius quickly gained recognition, and by 1890, he began formal production of shotguns with parallel barrels to satisfy enthusiastic friends and neighbors. Rodolfo's true vision emerged in 1905 when he dedicated himself to developing the perfect semi-automatic shotgun. After years of experimentation, he solved a critical design problem: the traditional under-barrel magazine position was both aesthetically displeasing and unbalanced. His revolutionary solution was to locate the tubular magazine inside the stock, creating an elegant, balanced firearm that was presented as a working prototype in 1925. This innovation became the foundation of Cosmi's international reputation. When Rodolfo passed away in 1936, his sons Marcello and Americo inherited not just a business, but a philosophy of excellence. In 1938, they relocated the company to Ancona, where it remains today. Marcello transformed the craft laboratory into a professional enterprise and earned a knighthood for his contributions, while Americo guided the mechanical evolution of the shotgun for 50 years. Through three centuries and four generations, Cosmi has maintained its commitment to blending tradition with innovation, producing approximately 8,000 shotguns that are considered the finest semi-automatic firearms in the world. Today, under the guidance of Rodolfo II and Federico Cosmi, with support from Luca Gaeti who joined in 2018, the company continues to create bespoke masterpieces that represent the pinnacle of Italian gunsmithing.
