Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów began its journey in 1917 as a local train repair workshop, serving the Polish State Railways. The devastation of World War II saw the factory’s equipment confiscated and sent to Germany, but post-war reconstruction brought new purpose. In 1951, ZMT transitioned to defense manufacturing, initially producing licensed Soviet anti-aircraft guns and aircraft cannons for Warsaw Pact forces. The fall of communism and Poland’s shift toward NATO standards marked a turning point, as ZMT developed its own designs, such as the Pallad grenade launcher and UKM-2000 machine gun. Overcoming the challenges of economic transition and fierce international competition, ZMT merged with a key R&D center in 2012 and joined the Polish Armaments Group in 2015, securing its place as a leader in the national defense industry. Today, ZMT’s vision is to combine heritage with cutting-edge technology, ensuring the security of Poland and its allies through innovation, quality, and resilience.
