The story of PT Pindad represents over two centuries of Indonesian industrial evolution and defense self-sufficiency. Beginning in 1808 under Dutch colonial rule, Governor-General Daendels established the Constructiewinkel in Surabaya as a workshop for military materiel maintenance, followed by the Projektiel Fabriek artillery workshop and the Pyrotechnische Werkplaats for naval materials and explosives. These scattered operations were consolidated during 1923-1932 into the Artillerie Inrichtingen in Bandung, creating the foundation for modern Indonesian defense manufacturing. During Japanese occupation, the facility was renamed Dai Ichi Kozo, and subsequently became Leger Productie Bedrijven under post-war Dutch administration. The pivotal moment arrived on April 29, 1950, when Indonesia gained sovereignty and the Netherlands transferred LPB to the Indonesian National Armed Forces, transforming it into Pabrik Senjata dan Mesiu (PSM) under Army management. The enterprise evolved through successive name changes—Pabrik Alat Peralatan Angkatan Darat (1958) and Perindustrian TNI Angkatan Darat (1962)—before achieving its defining transformation on April 29, 1983, when Prof. B.J. Habibie led its conversion into a Limited Liability Company. This strategic restructuring separated military production from defense ministry budgetary constraints, enabling Pindad to pursue commercial ventures while maintaining its core defense mission. The company has since grown into a multi-faceted industrial enterprise, producing everything from ammunition and rifles to special vehicles and commercial explosives, while maintaining technological independence and supporting Indonesia's defense capabilities across multiple sectors.
